What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a very gentle, remedial, fascia-release technique. The technique is subtle and relaxing and involves no hard or prolonged pressure, nor any crunching! It is a holistic therapy that addresses the 'whole you', not just the bit that hurts or causes you an issue. Bowen is usually given through light clothing while lying on a massage couch, although treatment can also be carried out effectively if seated in a chair or wheelchair. Bowen is not massage, acupressure or osteopathy. It is unique. There is no manipulation or force used in any of the moves. The thumbs or fingers are used to gently press against a muscle, tendon or ligament then, after a second or two, the therapist rolls over the area allowing the fascia to gently release beneath their hands. The pressure used is light, so even if you are suffering from a painful condition like Fibromyalgia, you can still receive Bowen. During the session, the therapist will pause for a few minutes at a time, this is to allow your body to respond to the moves that have been made. There are no contraindications with Bowen Therapy, although during pregnancy some ‘moves’ will be omitted. It is suitable for everyone: from babies to the elderly, professional athletes to those needing palliative care.
As Bowen is a holistic therapy your whole body will be treated in order to address the cause of your particular problem. It’s because of Bowen’s holistic-approach that it has such far-reaching effects on the body and on most conditions. It helps rebalance the autonomic nervous system (which controls over 80% of bodily functions) and this allows the body to relax and heal. As well as being relaxing, many clients report a positive change in their response to stressful situations.
The following conditions have been found to respond well to the Bowen Technique:
Musculoskeletal – Back, neck, knee pain, frozen shoulder, sciatica, arthritis, sports injuries, whiplash, jaw discomfort
Chronic – Fibromyalgia, MS, ME/CFS, migraines, Parkinsons, stroke-recovery
Digestive – IBS, Crohn’s, acid reflux, indigestion, constipation
Respiratory – Asthma, hayfever, bronchial complaints, sinus problems
Gynaecological – Infertility, irregular cycles, PMS, endometriosis, hormone imbalance, menopause
Mothers – Cramping, low back pain, morning sickness, depression, pelvic pain
Children – Infant colic, growing pain, allergies, glue ear, ADHD, bedwetting, sleep quality, behavioural concerns
... and for Improving – flexibility, posture, energy levels, sleep, stress/anxiety-issues, relaxation, concentration/focus
Adult sessions usually last between 45 minutes to 1 hour - the time varies as each session is tailored to meet your body's needs on that particular day. However, please allow up to 1½ hours for your first appointment as this will include a consultation and taking a detailed history. As every body is different, there is no definitive number of sessions, although it's generally recommended to initially have 3 sessions between 5-10 days apart to see positive results. Chronic conditions may take longer. Many people benefit from maintenance sessions after the problem is resolved, to keep their body in great shape and prevent the problem from returning. The time between maintenance sessions varies from person to person.
